In conducting various medical procedures (surgeries, examinations, intravenous shots, etc.,) there is a chance, although very unlikely, that unexpected outcomes may occur. These do not meet the expectations of the patients and their families and can lead to worsening symptoms, prolonging of and/or increasing cost of treatment, and other negative results. These outcomes can occur because modern medical techniques are imperfect and thus have some uncertainty.
At our hospital, we make efforts to explain to the patient and/or their family in as much detail as possible and in an easily understandable way that medical procedures have an inherent possibility of leading to these outcomes. We also strive every day to reduce this uncertainty as much as possible so as to produce a more desirable outcome. However, should any of the aforementioned negative results occur, we will provide the best possible treatment to help patients recover from them.
In the future, patients will be asked to provide their consent before undergoing any medical procedures. To do this, we will request patients sign a Statement of Consent affirming their recognition of the risks of medical uncertainty.
