Our basic policy on blood transfusions is the conditional acceptance of a life-saving blood transfusion.
What this means is that we respect the wishes of the patient and will try our best not to use blood transfusions. However, should the doctor determine that a blood transfusion has a chance of preventing the loss of life, we will perform a blood transfusion even without the patient’s consent.
Even if the patient or their family presents or has been issued a certificate of liability exemption, the aforementioned policy does not change.
This policy remains the same regardless of the patient’s age and decision-making capacity. We will make every effort to thoroughly explain our conditional acceptance policy for life-saving blood transfusions to patients who do not wish to receive any blood transfusion. Should the patient still be unwilling to consent, we advise seeking treatment at an alternate hospital if there is still enough time. Nevertheless, in the event of an urgent and life-threatening situation, we will proceed with a blood transfusion as a vital form of treatment.
